New Delhi summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires Saad Ahmad Warraich for a protest after a Pakistani navy vessel collided with an Indian warship on the evening of September 15 in international waters 220 km east of Oman.
The Indian Navy’s surveillance vessel was moving on a routine mission when the Pakistani ship, reportedly speeding, maneuvered dangerously close, causing a minor collision that did not inflict significant damage.
The incident violated Article 10 of the 1991 agreement that requires advance notice of military exercises, manoeuvres and troop movements between the two sides.
The Foreign Ministry said the conduct was unacceptable and unprofessional, urging Pakistani authorities to observe due care and respect the bilateral maritime protocols.
This is the second such collision; a similar incident occurred in June 2011 when the Pakistani ship Babur collided with India's Godavari.
Warraich will convey India's protest to Islamabad’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the Indian charge d’affaires in Islamabad will lodge a reciprocal protest. Both sides are expected to hold talks to prevent future incidents.
