Paul Fischer, a 55‑year‑old biology professor at Macalester College, was charged with first‑degree property damage after allegedly urinating on a student’s backpack on December 5 2025. The incident happened in the Olin‑Rice Science Center, where the student was working on a lab project.
Saint Paul police uncovered six earlier reports of urine in odd places on campus, from trash cans to laboratory sinks. Fischer told investigators he had been dumping urine from cups into campus trash or sinks for the past two years.
Macalester confirmed that Fischer's employment ended during the 2025‑26 academic year, citing the criminal charge. A spokesperson said the college was aware of the charge and had already terminated his contract.
The criminal complaint carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. He is scheduled to appear before a magistrate in early November.
If convicted, Fischer could be sentenced later in 2026, while the college continues to review its safety protocols.
