New Zealand’s pace core shivers as Will O’Rourke is ruled out of the home series against India, a decision that leaves the side scrambling for depth.
O’Rourke, 25, had only returned to international cricket after a seven‑month layoff from a back fracture. The bowler tore his hamstring on the last day of the third Test against England and then sprained a calf in late August training – a double‑whammy that has derailed his comeback.
Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes are also out of the T20I slate, so New Zealand’s front‑line bowlers are looking thinner than usual. Coach Rob Walter says the decision was a “cautious approach” – “we want him fully fit for the busy period ahead.”
Walter added, “We all agreed it’s best to give Will more time to rehabilitate and build up his bowling loads safely.” The side hopes he can return in the Plunket Shield by late December and, if the rehab stays on track, he will be ready for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9.
With the Indian series out of the equation, the focus now shifts to the four‑Test tour of Australia. The New Zealand squad will need to shore up its pace attack, but O’Rourke’s recovery could be the keystone for a competitive campaign in Perth.
