Bangladesh has begun a man‑hunt for Mamtaj Begum, a woman from Nagaon, Assam, after her June 14, 2026 deportation.
Begum was declared a foreigner by a Nagaon Foreigners Tribunal on June 6, 2019, a verdict that the Gauhati High Court invalidated on April 20, 2026.
On May 30, police seized Begum from the court premises and transferred her to Sribhumi detention centre. Her husband had filed a writ petition after her deportation, prompting the High Court to order her return.
Bangladeshi officials have posted her photograph across Dhaka, Sylhet and other cities, hoping locals spot her. If found, she will be escorted back to Assam under the High Court’s directive.
