The United Nations General Assembly will convene in New York this week, drawing nearly 130 world leaders to discuss wars in the Middle East, Ukraine and AI regulation. President Donald Trump arrives in the city on Monday to attend the session and to meet local officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani, who unseated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, has been a frequent target of Republican criticism. Trump softened his tone after Mamdani’s election, calling the mayor‑elect a surprise to some conservatives during their first post‑election encounter.
During a February meeting, Mamdani handed Trump a mock front page of the New York Daily News reading “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” The parody referenced a 1975 headline that promised a veto of federal aid to New York, underscoring the mayor’s push for federal funding in housing.
Both leaders have used their exchanges to push for federal assistance for New York’s housing crisis and infrastructure upgrades. Mamdani’s communications director Anna Bahr said the agenda would focus on “issues affecting New York City and its residents.”
The discussion is slated to lead to a joint statement on federal support, expected to be released Tuesday morning ahead of Trump’s final UNGA speech. Republicans have already demanded a review of the funding proposal, but the mayor’s coalition is poised to secure a substantial allocation.
