Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton presented the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award to Reema Nanavaty at Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security on Thursday.\n
Nanavaty, director of SEWA, has turned the organization into India’s largest informal sector union, mobilizing thousands of women in diverse industries.\n
Under her guidance, SEWA has launched women‑owned enterprises and supply chains in energy, agribusiness, food processing, waste recycling and textiles, and runs a food security program that reaches one million households.\n
She also spearheaded rehabilitation programs for earthquake‑affected rural women and in conflict‑torn Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, and the Hariyali Green Energy Initiative that grants women access to renewable energy.\n
The award will strengthen her efforts to secure further support for women‑led renewable energy projects and expand SEWA’s reach across India.
