On Sunday, Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar postponed its mid‑term examinations and suspended classes for ten days, citing escalating violence from student protests.
Students seized campus buildings, vandalized property, blocked the nearby national highway, and hurled stones at police vehicles, injuring several officers. The police used lathi charges to disperse the crowd, but later that evening, mobs set fire to several police vehicles and torched academic buildings.
In a statement released by LPU, the administration urged students to remain inside hostels, avoid public areas, and consider traveling home with parents or guardians during the suspension.
The unrest follows an alleged rape‑suicide incident involving a LPU student, which has spurred accusations against the university and intensified demands for accountability.
Nidhi Sharma, a sophomore in the Mechanical Engineering department, said her brother, a resident of the campus hostel, had to stay inside for the entire week, fearing for his safety.
LPU will communicate a revised exam schedule via the UMS portal, and classes are slated to resume on October 7, 2026, once the campus is deemed secure.
