In the latest talks, SP's Akhilesh Yadav has floated a performance‑based seat‑sharing formula that would allocate the Congress 53 to 55 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, a figure that falls short of the 150 seats the national party demands.
The proposal stems from the SP’s analysis of the 2024 Lok Sabha results, where the party captured 37 of 403 seats in the state and has mapped those victories onto Assembly segments. The Congress, having won only six Lok Sabha seats in the state, argues that as a national party it deserves a larger share.
Yadav insists that seats should go to the party with a winning edge, citing the need for a “performance‑based” approach. He added that the SP will contest roughly 350 of the 403 Assembly seats, leaving the remaining 53 to the Congress.
Congress leaders have maintained that their 150‑seat demand reflects the party’s national status and its broader appeal across the state. The disagreement signals a deeper rift within the alliance ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Both parties have pledged to keep the alliance intact, with Yadav saying that the national leadership of both parties will jointly decide the final split. The next step will be a summit in Lucknow where the parties are expected to settle the seat‑sharing arrangement.
