The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, ordered the Delhi Police commissioner and the Gurugram Police to submit affidavits explaining why the body of missing realtor Yuvraj Singh Manchanda was cremated without identification. Manchanda’s corpse, recovered from a Gurugram drain on September 10, was cremated on September 14, yet his family only received the news on September 16.
The court also demanded the Gurugram police explain why the recovery details had not been uploaded to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems portal. Anya Vats and her husband Sanyam Sachdeva have been arrested as accused in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
This case follows a May 22 directive by the bench to register FIRs immediately in missing‑person cases, citing 47,000 untraced children nationwide. The Court emphasized that missing persons should be presumed kidnapped from the outset, and that recovered individuals must be verified with Aadhaar on the spot.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a further hearing for October 5, where the police will present their affidavits. The family has expressed frustration at being left in the dark, and the case is expected to set a precedent for handling unidentified bodies.
