A silver Kwan Ping Trade Coin pattern, minted in London in 1867, hammered the gavel at $4.758 million at Stack's Bowers Galleries' Hong Kong auction. This single lot, catalogued as Lot 41023, became the top seller in an event that closed on October 26, 2026, with results finalized on November 3. The price included the buyer's premium, cementing the coin's status as the auction's crown jewel.
The coin was never meant for circulation. W. F. Wade, the Chinese Secretary of the British Legation in Peking, proposed the series to standardize trade currency across Chinese treaty ports. The design, featuring intertwined Chinese dragons and a yin-yang symbol, reflects a failed diplomatic and economic experiment. Wade's proposal reached the Governor of Hong Kong in October 1867, but the Hong Kong Mint shut down in April 1868, killing the project before the coins could leave the factory floor.
Scarcity drove the price. Archival documents discovered in 2017-18, including a letter from Peter Campbell to Sir Robert Hart, confirm that only 102 examples of each denomination were produced. The specific specimen sold was graded PCGS Specimen-66, indicating near-perfect preservation. It had been locked away in the Liu Mung Wang private collection for 76 years, absent from the public market since the mid-20th century.
The broader auction context is equally striking. Stack's Bowers reported nearly $32 million in total sales for the event. This figure underscores the robust international appetite for high-end numismatics, particularly pieces that bridge East-West trade histories. The coin's journey from a London die to a Shanghai banking agent in 1875, and finally to a Hong Kong hammer, illustrates the complex lineage that collectors now pay a premium to own.
The next milestone for the coin is unclear, but its provenance is now permanently tied to the Liu Mung Wang Collection's dispersal. For numismatists, the sale validates the research of scholar Joe Cribb, whose work clarified the coin's English origins. The market's reaction suggests that similar high-grade patterns from this era will command seven-figure prices in upcoming sales.
