Ajit Doval, India's National Security Adviser, rang Mohsen Rezaei, the Supreme National Security Council Secretary of Iran, on 12 October 2023 to address the safety of Indian seafarers and tankers in light of recent maritime attacks. The call, confirmed by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, covered bilateral issues, the broader regional situation, and international developments that affect both nations.
On 11 October, the Nicaragua‑flagged tanker MT Petro Dolphin was struck by a drone at Sohar Anchorage, leaving 11 Indian crew members aboard; nine were rescued, while two Indians remain missing. The same day, the Marshall Islands‑flagged MT Valthera was hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, setting fire to the vessel, yet all 11 Indian crew survived. Earlier, on 9 October, the Panama‑flagged MT GEM NO. 2 faced a drone attack at Sharjah Anchorage; all 22 Indian nationals aboard were reported safe.
These incidents have amplified concerns over maritime security in the Gulf, especially along the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil supplies. The dialogue between Doval and Rezaei aims to strengthen protective protocols for Indian ships operating in these waters, potentially involving coordinated patrols or enhanced communication channels between the two countries.
For the families of the missing crew members, the uncertainty is palpable. Local maritime unions have urged both governments to expedite rescue and recovery operations, while port authorities in India are tightening escort services for vessels transiting the Gulf.
The conversation is part of a broader diplomatic effort, and Indian officials are expected to convene a joint maritime security review with Iranian counterparts shortly, setting the stage for concrete protective measures in the coming weeks.
