Hamirpur police detained a woman working as a bank peon after courts in Rampur, Hamirpur, and Jhanduta issued non-bailable warrants against her. The arrest, executed on October 24, follows a fraud case registered at the Sadar Police Station. Authorities are currently interrogating her, though they have withheld her name pending the outcome of the questioning.
The scheme relied on a simple, devastating promise: cash for a government job. Unemployed youths and families in Palampur and Rampur handed over lakhs of rupees, trusting her position at the bank. When the positions never materialized, victims demanded refunds. She allegedly stalled them, eventually issuing cheques that bounced due to insufficient funds.
The fraud unraveled after one young man filed a complaint, according to Hamirpur ASP Rajesh Kumar. That single report triggered a wave of similar accusations. Police say the total amount swindled stands at approximately ₹20 lakh.
ASP Kumar confirmed a probe is underway to identify potential co-conspirators. The next step involves analyzing bank records and digital footprints to trace the flow of the stolen money.
