BJP and its National Democratic Alliance allies captured 12 of the 28 legislative council seats contested across Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Bihar on May 2026. In Uttar Pradesh, the party swept six seats, taking Agra, Bareilly‑Moradabad, Lucknow, Meerut teachers and graduates, and Gorakhpur‑Faizabad teachers. Karnataka voters handed the BJP three seats—Shashil G. Namoshi, SV Sanknur and KM Suresh—while its ally Janata Dal (Secular) took the Bengaluru teachers seat.
In Maharashtra, the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition won the Nagpur Division Graduates constituency, a BJP stronghold, with Congress candidate Abhijit Govindrao Wanjarri defeating Sudhakar Kohle by 3,271 votes after a protracted ballot count. Wanjarri told reporters the BJP had mobilised heavily but failed to turn votes, adding, "The way the BJP put its all into these elections; big leaders of the BJP were in Nagpur. However, voters were with us." The win marks the first consecutive victory for Congress in the Nagpur seat.
Other results saw the NCP (SP) capture Pune graduates and lead in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, while the BJP secured two seats in Bihar—Narendra Singh in Tirhut teachers and NK Yadav in Kosi graduates—and remained ahead in Darbhanga graduates. The state's remaining seats are still counting, and the Shiv Sena and NCP (SP) are contesting the remaining constituencies.
The Election Commission will certify the results on June 12, 2026, after which the four state legislative councils will convene to elect their new members. The BJP's dominance in the north and the MVA's foothold in Nagpur may influence coalition dynamics ahead of the next state elections.
