General NS Raja Subramani, the Chief of Defence Staff, told NDTV on Sunday that artificial intelligence will overhaul every facet of Indian warfare by 2026. He warned that the technology could be both a boon and a risk, underscoring the need for robust safeguards.
Subramani cited joint efforts with the National AI Mission, MeitY and DRDO, as well as private firms, to embed AI into operational planning, logistics, and decision‑support. The forces have already deployed AI in open‑source intelligence and predictive analytics, giving commanders near‑real‑time threat assessments.
He stressed that AI must operate at the battlefield edge, not just in headquarters, so soldiers will soon carry AI‑enabled tools for situational awareness. Legacy systems are being retrofitted with machine‑learning modules, while new acquisitions come pre‑loaded with AI capabilities.
The chief warned that adversaries might weaponise AI against India, so the army is tightening cyber defences and developing sovereign models, including small language models tailored to Indian contexts. Guardrails will be built to prevent data poisoning and ensure commanders retain final decision authority.
Subramani announced a phased rollout of AI‑enhanced systems across the army, navy and air force, with the first wave slated to begin in March 2026. The Defence Ministry will monitor performance and adjust the deployment schedule as needed.
