Halima Salman, a 27‑year‑old Brooklyn native, was taken with her mother to Turkey in 2017 by her father, who then drove the van across the Syria border.
Masked gunmen seized the family upon entry. Salman spent three months in an IS‑run shelter, before the family fled again when their home was hit by airstrikes.
In 2018, she married an IS fighter under duress. She repeatedly tried to divorce, but was warned that escape would mean death.
Prosecutors showed a video of Salman holding an assault rifle and a photo beside the IS flag. Assistant US Attorney Amanda Shami told the jury that she had received weapons training.
Brooklyn‑based US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. said the verdict held her "accountable for joining forces with a terrorist organization." Her defense argued she was a teenage victim.
The jury deliberated for more than a week before returning the guilty verdict on Tuesday. Sentencing will take place February 2, when the judge may consider a motion to set aside the conviction.
