Neeraj, a 40-year-old lawyer practising in the Supreme Court, is dead. His wife lies in a coma with 18 fractures. The accident happened in broad daylight in the Itera area of Greater Noida West, when a speeding Mahindra Thar slammed into their scooter from the wrong side of the road. The impact was violent enough to throw the couple off the bike, leaving them bloodied on the tarmac as a crowd formed.
The driver abandoned the SUV and fled the scene. Locals called an ambulance, but doctors declared Neeraj dead on arrival. His wife’s condition is dire. Her entire left side is paralysed, and her pelvic region was completely crushed. She has already undergone multiple surgeries, yet she remains unconscious.
Amit Kumar, Neeraj’s elder brother, told NDTV that eyewitnesses reported the four men inside the Thar were drunk. "The SUV was coming from the wrong side of the road," Amit said. "You can watch the video. They were overspeeding." He added that bystanders caught two of the occupants, but the other two, including the driver, escaped.
Financial ruin looms alongside the grief. Medical bills have already crossed ₹7 lakh, piling up since the accident yesterday. Neeraj’s family is now fighting for their daughter-in-law’s life while seeking justice for the hit-and-run. The police have seized the Thar and completed the inquest, but the man behind the wheel is still a ghost.
Greater Noida police have launched a search for the driver. A formal complaint is being registered based on the family’s statement. Until the accused is in custody and the case moves from a search warrant to a charge sheet, the family remains trapped in a 20-hour long nightmare with no end in sight.
