Aradhana Misra, daughter of MP Pramod Tiwari, was named the Uttar Pradesh Congress president today. The move makes her the first Brahmin to lead the party's state unit. Misra is known for her outreach to women and Brahmin voters, a demographic that has been pivotal in recent electoral battles.
Congress's reshuffle comes after a series of appointments designed to broaden its caste appeal. By aligning with the Samajwadi Party, the party seeks a seat‑sharing arrangement that could counter the BJP's dominance in the upcoming June 2027 assembly polls.
When asked about Samajwadi leader Akhilesh Yadav, Misra said, "The Samajwadi Party is a strong partner in the INDIA bloc, and Akhilesh has fortified his party's standing." She added that the alliance prevented the BJP from clinching a fourth straight win in 2024.
The new leadership also includes working president Rajya Sabha MP Imran Masood, legislature party leader Chaudhary Virendra Singh, and senior vice presidents Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad, ensuring a mix of religious and caste representation.
The INDIA coalition captured 43 of Uttar Pradesh's 80 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 general election, a decisive blow to the BJP's long‑running campaign in the state.
Misra will spearhead the seat‑sharing negotiations, with a formal agreement expected by the end of May, setting the stage for the next phase of the alliance's strategy ahead of the June polls.
