Congress leaders demanded an FIR after 343 voter ID cards from Indore were recovered at Mandleshwar Ghat, Khargone district, on Sunday. The cards, stamped with addresses in Indore, were found during a river‑cleaning drive by the Niswarth Seva Group and seized by a revenue team that prepared an official record.
The discovery sparked a protest outside the Mandleshwar police station, where Congress workers pressed for an impartial investigation and an FIR against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They accused the Election Commission of enabling electoral malpractice and called for divers to scour the Narmada for more such cards.
Officials in Indore and the election office are being questioned to trace the cards’ journey. The revenue department has noted that the IDs belong to voters in the Rau Assembly constituency, raising doubts about how documents from 90 km away ended up on the riverbank.
This incident feeds into Congress’s broader campaign against the BJP and the Election Commission, citing irregularities in voter lists and the Special Intensive Revision exercise. The party has repeatedly warned that any failure to conduct a fair probe would amount to treason against the country.
A resident of the Rau area, who was present during the cleaning drive, said he was stunned to see familiar names on the IDs—one of his neighbors had lost his card in a flood last year, and now it floated in the river.
The Mandleshwar police station in‑charge has been directed to investigate the matter, and the Election Commission will release its findings once the probe concludes. The next step, if the investigation uncovers foul play, could see criminal charges against those responsible.
