Jamia Millia Islamia’s administration issued an order on Thursday, approving the implementation of the students’ union constitution and directing protestors to cease their agitation. The order, dated October 29, sets May 15, 2027 as the deadline for completing the process.
The decision follows a month‑long protest that began on October 12. Students staged a hunger strike and demanded an elected student body after almost twenty years without elections. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal praised the students on X, saying the ‘fascists had to bend before student power’.
The order also orders the withdrawal of all show‑cause notices, disciplinary inquiries, rustication, suspension orders, and campus bans issued during the protest. No disciplinary action will be taken against the protestors.
The university will schedule student union elections within six weeks of the upcoming academic session, set to begin around July 16, 2027, following the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee on student elections.
A senior student expressed relief, saying the protest had taken a toll on his studies and that the decision felt like a long‑awaited victory.
The university’s decision comes as the next step is to announce the election schedule, with campus activities expected to resume normalcy by mid‑July 2027.
