French President Emmanuel Macron is set to bestow the Légion d’Honneur, the Republic’s highest civilian distinction, on Sunil Bharti Mittal. The ceremony will take place at the Ambassade de France in New Delhi on October 28, 2026. This is no minor plaque on a wall; it is the same order Napoleon Bonaparte established in 1802 to recognize merit in both civil and military spheres.
The award acknowledges Mittal’s three-decade track record of bridging Indian and French business interests. French Ambassador to India Thierry Mathou highlighted this longevity, noting that Mittal has been a "friend of France" since the early days of Airtel in 1992. That year, Compagnie Générale des Eaux partnered with Bharti to introduce mobile telephony to the subcontinent.
Mittal’s influence extends beyond the cellular grid. As Vice-Chairman of Eutelsat, the European satellite giant, he currently steers joint ventures in space and digital technology. Mathou specifically cited Mittal’s ability to show "what French and Indian business endeavours can achieve together," positioning the tycoon as a key architect of the two nations' modern economic partnership.
It is a rare distinction. In 2007, India handed Mittal the Padma Bhushan. Then, in 2024, King Charles III made him the first Indian citizen to receive the Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE). Now, with the French insignia, he holds top-tier civilian honors from three major global powers.
Mittal accepted the honor with a nod to the past and a gaze toward the future. He stated he accepts the distinction "with gratitude to the President of the French Republic," reaffirming a commitment to deepening economic ties. The next concrete step is the physical conferral of the insignia in late October, a diplomatic event that will likely draw heavy attention from both business and government circles in New Delhi.
