UP Chief Election Officer flagged 158 strange entries in the 14.81‑million‑strong roll for the Allahabad‑Jhansi graduate constituency as polling for 11 Legislative Council seats kicks off at 8 a.m. on Friday.
The entries, ranging from ‘Ram ne Yadav ko maara’ to ‘B.Com’ in place of a father’s name, stem from a translation glitch in the software that converted English names into Hindi, the officer said.
Polling is underway in five graduate and six teacher constituencies, with the 11 seats scheduled to be filled on October 27. District magistrates have been instructed to cross‑check and delete erroneous names before the ballot.
One voter in Allahabad, Karan Singh, said the mistake made him uneasy, but he remains confident the elections will proceed smoothly.
The Election Commission has promised a full audit of the roll by mid‑week, and the counting will be completed by October 31, as per the election timeline.
