A sweater that once cost 58 cents at a North Carolina Goodwill just set the record at Heritage Auctions, fetching a staggering $43,020. The black‑and‑gold garment, linked to legendary coach Vince Lombardi, turned a thrift‑store purchase into a multimillion‑dollar treasure.
But the real twist came when the McEvoys, a Knoxville couple, watched a documentary about Lombardi and spotted a sweater that looked strikingly similar to their find. Inside, a white cotton swatch read "Lombardi 46," sealing the connection and turning a mundane garment into a historical relic.
The sweater had once hung in West Point’s locker room, where Lombardi served as an assistant coach before his NFL glory. It was donated by the widow of Bill Wannamaker, a fellow West Point coach, and later consigned to auction. Heritage Auctions even donated its entire seller’s commission back to Goodwill, honoring the family’s wish to support charity.
The jump from 58¢ to $43,020 underscores the hidden value of early NFL artifacts and sets a benchmark for collectors eyeing vintage sports pieces. Next up, an auction of a 1958 New York Giants helmet could fetch similar sums, keeping the spotlight on historic football gear.
