Four men escaped a perilous situation at Thornwick Bay in North Yorkshire on Saturday, October 10, after becoming trapped in difficult water conditions. The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team confirmed the operation in a press release, detailing how the men struggled to swim near the coast. By the time help arrived, the group had fractured: one man reached the shore, another remained in the water, and two took shelter inside a cliffside cave.
The rescue required a synchronized effort between the Bridlington Coastguard, Filey Coastguard Rescue Team, and Flamborough RNLI. While the RNLI and Coastguard pulled the swimmer from the sea, a rescue helicopter waited on land. The man was transferred via cable to the aircraft, ending his time in the cold water.
The two men inside the cave presented a different problem. Overhanging cliffs blocked any aerial approach, forcing the officer in charge to calculate the safest ground route. A cliff rescue technician descended to within five metres of the men to assess the situation. Just as the assessment concluded, tidal conditions began to improve.
Seizing that window, RNLI rescuers pulled the two men from the cave. They were immediately transferred to the rescue helicopter. All four men are now safe, marking the end of a tense, multi-agency operation in the North Yorkshire coastline.
