The superintendent of a government secondary ashram school in Jambhulghat, Chimur taluka, allegedly ordered a barber to shave only half of the heads of 82 students on Saturday. The disciplinary action was taken because some pupils were playing while the haircut session was underway, a behavior that reportedly angered the school administration.
Photographs of the children with uneven, half-shaved hairstyles circulated online, igniting immediate outrage among parents in Chandrapur district. The visual evidence showed the students with distinct lines of shaved hair, a stark and humiliating marker of their transgression.
School Principal Prashant Giri moved quickly, issuing a show-cause notice to Superintendent Prashant Meshram. Meshram defended the act, claiming it was a hygiene measure due to rains preventing regular cuts, and insisted there was no malicious intent. But the timeline tells a different story.
Higher officials intervened after the media coverage, directing the school to normalize the haircuts. The corrective process began around 11 PM on Saturday and continued until 4 AM on Sunday, forcing the children to sit through the ordeal while others were preparing for bed.
Parents have rejected the show-cause notice as insufficient, demanding a detailed and impartial inquiry into the incident. They are seeking strict action against those responsible, arguing that such punitive measures violate the dignity of the students.
