Jon Bon Jovi and his wife opened the JBJ Soul Kitchen on Rutgers‑Newark’s Paul Robeson Campus Center in 2020, and the restaurant has now served more than 14,000 meals to students, staff and local residents.
The pay‑it‑forward model lets diners suggest a donation, while those who cannot contribute still receive a three‑course meal prepared by campus chefs.
Rutgers‑Newark partnered with the JBJ Soul Foundation and Gourmet Dining, and local groups such as the Newark Teachers Association and RU‑N Pantry+ help keep the kitchen running.
Dean of Student Services, Dr. Lisa Patel, said the kitchen “has become a lifeline for students balancing tuition and living costs.”
On Nov. 10, 2025, the university and the foundation hosted a celebratory lunch that drew 200 guests, including students, faculty and volunteers.
The foundation noted that 54% of the 14,000 meals served to date went to people in need, underscoring the ongoing demand for affordable food on campus.
The restaurant plans to expand its menu and volunteer program for the next year, while the foundation seeks additional funding to open a second campus‑based location.
