The Network of Women in Media (NWMI) issued a statement today condemning the Delhi Police for aggressive behaviour toward female journalists covering the anti-CEC protest in the capital.
NWMI, a pan‑India volunteer collective of women media professionals, said the police’s tactics—batons, scuffles and verbal harassment—threatened the very existence of a free press. "The NWMI stands in solidarity with our journalist colleagues who faced aggressive behaviour by police personnel while carrying out their professional duties," the organisation added.
The protest itself drew a large contingent of women journalists who were reporting on the CEC’s controversial policy changes. NWMI highlighted that the police’s conduct not only infringed on journalists’ safety but also violated democratic norms.
In response, NWMI has demanded accountability from the Delhi Police and called for a formal inquiry into the incidents, urging authorities to investigate and prevent future abuses.
