TDP and YSRCP cadres clashed in multiple districts of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, throwing stones and damaging vehicles. In Chittoor Zilla Parishad office, YSRCP women candidates were reportedly attacked by TDP workers, who allegedly tore up their nomination papers in front of election officials and police. Similar violence erupted in G.D. Nellore, where a YSRCP ZPTC candidate’s documents were ripped apart, and in Chandragiri, where the skirmish escalated to a full‑blown altercation that prompted police to register cases against both parties.
In Anantapur district’s MPDO office, a TDP supporter’s arrival to file nomination papers sparked a fight that left the candidate injured and a vehicle set ablaze. The clash in Nandalur, Kadapa district, saw a car torched and traffic on the National Highway halted as TDP and opposition workers hurled stones, wooden sticks, plastic chairs and glass bottles. Police lathi charges and crowd control measures were employed to restore order, but several police officers sustained injuries while dispersing the groups.
The violence forced the house arrest of several opposition leaders across the state, while police issued notices to party cadres and increased deployment of personnel. According to PTI footage, dozens of TDP workers were seriously hurt in Pedda Thippasamudram, Annamayya district, and the Janasena Party office was vandalised amid the melee. Meanwhile, in Nandalur, the street brawl escalated to a point where traffic on both sides of the highway stood still, highlighting the broader disruption caused by the clashes.
Police have filed multiple FIRs for the incidents and are reviewing security protocols ahead of the upcoming local body elections. Officials said they would convene a meeting with party leaders to address grievances and prevent further unrest. The Election Commission remains on standby to assess whether additional measures are required to safeguard the nomination process.
