Zelensky posted on X that a Shahed drone struck a Kyiv energy plant on Sunday, the first such attack since the ceasefire announcement.
Earlier that morning, Trump declared on Truth Social that an energy ceasefire was in effect, urging both sides to abide. Zelensky said he was surprised and wants confirmation from Moscow.
The ceasefire follows Trump’s easing of sanctions on Russian diesel two days earlier, a move that sparked condemnation from Kyiv and its European partners, who say it emboldens Putin. Trump blamed Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries for diesel price surges, citing risks to his electoral prospects.
Russia has launched relentless attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure since February 2022, shutting down power for millions during winter, while Ukraine has struck Russian oil refineries to cut funding for the war. The latest strike followed attacks in Kharkiv on other facilities.
Moscow has yet to confirm its agreement; a statement is expected by Friday. U.S. officials plan to brief NATO on the situation by Thursday.
