The idea for a public high‑school arts program surfaced in 1999 when Bennett, a former singer‑artist, teamed up with Benedetto, a former teacher, to pitch the concept to the New York City Department of Education. They secured the first space in temporary quarters, allowing 250 students to audition for dance, drama, film, fine art, vocal and instrumental majors.
The new building, completed in 2009 at the Kaufman Astoria Studios complex, was designed by Susan T. Rodriguez of Ennead Architects. It houses two dance studios, two black‑box theatres, a film lab, an art gallery, and a rooftop performance area, all of which give students hands‑on experience in professional‑grade facilities.
Admission is competitive; students must audition and then choose a discipline. The curriculum balances rigorous arts training with core academics, preparing graduates for conservatories and competitive colleges. The 800‑seat Tony Bennett Concert Hall hosts school‑wide productions, concerts, and student‑made film screenings.
Benedetto has spoken about the school’s impact, noting that Tony was “proud of the students, the teachers, and the community.” The Exploring the Arts foundation, founded by the couple, continues to sponsor scholarships and internship programs, extending the school’s reach to other New York City and Los Angeles public schools.
