In a meeting on Monday night at the Punjab secretariat, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann sat with leaders of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha to discuss the parole of Jagtar Singh Hawara, the life‑sentenced assassin of former Punjab CM Beant Singh in 1995.
According to Morcha spokespersons, Mann assured the delegation that the state’s Advocate General would argue in favour of moving Hawara to a Punjab jail during the Supreme Court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Morcha leaders expressed optimism, saying Hawara could be released at any time pending the Court’s decision, while noting that the parole and transfer matters are distinct yet will be addressed in the same hearing.
The discussion also touched on other political prisoners—Paramjit Singh Bheora, Jagtar Singh Tara, Balwant Singh Rajoana and Amritpal Singh—signalling a broader push for political clemency.
The Supreme Court is slated to deliberate on the transfer and parole on Tuesday, after which the state may file a petition to release Hawara.
