A 15‑year‑old student fired a hunting rifle outside the front gate of İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, Manisa, at about 8:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Eleven pupils were hit, two of them seriously wounded, before police wrestled the teenager to the ground and detained him.
The shooting follows two teenage‑led attacks earlier this year, the first in Kahramanmaras that claimed a teacher and nine children, and the second in Sanliurfa that left 16 wounded before the gunman took his own life. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised tighter gun controls and pledged school safety as a top priority.
Justice Minister Akin Gurlek posted on X that the suspect’s parents and grandfather have been taken into custody amid an investigation into how the weapon entered the teen’s possession, the conditions under which it was stored, and alleged bullying at the school. CCTV footage shows the gunman, wearing black jeans and a green top, running from the scene with a long‑barreled rifle.
At the school, classes were suspended for the day, and students who survived the blast described seeing the gunfire echo through the courtyard. One 16‑year‑old survivor, who was walking to class when shots rang out, said he heard the gunman shout angrily before the bullets struck.
The prosecutor’s office will charge the teenager with attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, and the case is expected to be heard at the Turgutlu court within the next few weeks, according to the Ministry of Justice.
