The left‑hander’s 11 sixes and nine fours made the century the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian batter, eclipsing Rohit Sharma’s 35‑ball record from 2017. He reached 100 in just six overs, the highest score in a powerplay for an Indian side, and became the quickest Test‑nation player to hit a T20I century against another Test‑nation. The powerplay proved brutal for Afghanistan, with Azmat Omarzai leaking 17 runs and Fazalhaq Farooqi conceding 23 in the third over.
"The culture we’ve built lets me play my natural game," Sharma told reporters, crediting captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Gautam Gambhir for the freedom to attack. He added that the support from the captain and coach “keeps me confident” and removes the fear of failure.
