Biru Singh, a 37‑year‑old salesman from Arra, was seized by three men on the night of Dussehra, October 20, and forced onto the roof of a moving vehicle. The car roared 1.5 kilometres around the city before the assailants hurled Singh onto the street and allegedly drove over him.
The victim, a father of three, was returning home from a fair when a heated argument with Rajveer and Mewalal spiralled into violence. According to witnesses, the men tied Singh’s hands between the car’s windows and left him exposed as the vehicle sped past traffic lights.
Reena Singh, Biru’s wife, has ruled out an accident, demanding that CCTV footage be reviewed and the perpetrators prosecuted. She accused the men of a pre‑planned attack stemming from an old feud and called for swift justice.
Abhishek Kumar Rahul, the Naubasta ACP, confirmed that surveillance footage is under scrutiny. “We have received the complaint from Kuldeep Singh Bhadauria, Biru’s brother, and the investigation is underway,” Rahul said.
The police have detained three suspects linked to the assault, pending formal charges. A hearing is scheduled for the first week of November, after which the case will proceed to trial.
Residents of Kanpur are stunned; one neighbour, Devendra Singh Chauhan, who saw the incident, helped alert the family and provided a key eyewitness statement. The city’s traffic police are offering to release the footage to the public upon request.
