The operations unfolded on Wednesday, with 12 suspected migrants seized from the Assam State Transport Corporation campus in Guwahati after a tip from border intelligence. A second group of 15 was intercepted after the Jammu Tawi Express crossed Rangiya junction, deboarded at Bongaigaon, and turned over to police.
All 27 detainees lack valid documents, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Border) Kulendra Nath Deka. The police are pursuing an expulsion order through the Deputy Commissioner, after which the men, women and minors will be sent back to Bangladesh.
Sources say the group came from Dhaka, Sunamganj, Gopalganj, Bagherhat, Khulna and Mymensingh. Investigators are probing whether a broker or intermediary facilitated their entry through Meghalaya, a route that has seen a surge in illegal crossings.
Deka added that most detainees reportedly entered India seeking employment and that criminal cases will be registered. He stressed that further inquiry will determine the extent of any network involved in smuggling.
A 12‑year‑old girl from the group, who was found clutching a school bag, said she had been promised a job in the transport sector. Her parents, now in custody of the Assam Police, fear losing their livelihood once the expulsion order is executed.
