Alessia Cara announced on June 25, 2020 that she would donate her share of the "This Summer: Live Off the Floor" EP royalties to Save the Children for a 21‑year period. The Canadian pop star, who recorded the EP in 2019, chose to redirect the revenue stream toward children facing poverty, displacement and limited access to basic services.
Save the Children Canada said the pledge would fund programs in over 100 countries, including Yemen, Canada, and other crisis zones. Bill Chambers, the organisation’s President and CEO, explained that the partnership will help the most marginalized children survive, learn and be protected from harm.
The agreement covers Cara’s share of royalties, not a fixed sum, meaning the actual donation will depend on sales and streaming revenue. The 21‑year duration guarantees a long‑term funding source, with annual disbursements linked to the EP’s commercial performance.
Critics note the absence of a specified amount, but the arrangement still represents a significant contribution. Save the Children will use the proceeds for both immediate needs and ongoing programmes, with the first tranche expected in late 2020 and subsequent payments scheduled each year thereafter.
The charity will monitor royalty income and distribute funds annually, while Cara continues to promote the EP to maximize donations. The next milestone will be the release of the first payment to Yemen’s children in the summer of 2021.
