Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that the BJP’s win in Nagaon marked a turning point, pointing out that Congress had taken the seat with a margin of more than two lakh votes in 2024.
Devasish Sharma, a former IAS officer, captured 7,14,349 votes, beating AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal who polled 5,72,125, a margin of 1,42,224.
Sarma slammed opposition parties, accusing them of repeatedly challenging the Election Commission whenever BJP wins and alleging they push for inclusion of ineligible names on the rolls.
The result also dealt a blow to AIUDF and the minority electorate; Sarma called it a “crushing defeat” for Rahul Gandhi and warned that opposition protests in New Delhi would be futile.
With the BJP’s strengthened foothold in Assam, party officials are expected to redirect resources to maintain momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
