ICICI Bank’s standalone net profit for the July-September quarter hit ₹14,843 crore, a 20.1% leap from the same period last year. The jump wasn't accidental. It leaned heavily on a 30% surge in advances to ₹18.32 lakh crore and a 6.9% drop in provisions and contingencies to ₹850.69 crore. On a consolidated basis, net profit rose 22.28% to ₹16,333.18 crore, comfortably beating the previous year's ₹13,357.06 crore mark.
Net interest income (NII) carried much of the weight, climbing 17.7% to ₹25,339 crore. Core operating profit followed suit, up 21.8% to ₹20,805 crore. Yet, the net interest margin (NIM) ticked down to 4.18%, a slide from 4.30% a year ago and 4.36% in the prior quarter. That slight compression is the trade-off for aggressive lending growth in a rate-sensitive environment.
Asset quality tells a cleaner story. Gross NPAs dropped to 1.20% at the end of September, down from 1.58% a year earlier and 1.38% in the preceding quarter. Net NPAs eased to 0.30% from 0.39%. Deposits grew 27.1% to ₹20.50 lakh crore, though that figure includes FCNR-B deposits; excluding those, growth was a more modest 17%. The capital adequacy ratio strengthened to 16.68%, up from 15.76% a year ago, giving the bank ample room to keep expanding.
The next quarter will test whether ICICI can sustain this balance between growth and margin. Watch the NIM trajectory and whether loan growth can hold above 25% without further eroding profitability.
