On Thursday, UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres urged nations to adopt Gandhi’s non‑violent philosophy during the International Day of Non‑Violence, October 2, 2026.
The appeal was delivered during a themed session, "Non‑violence as a Means to Peace and Development," hosted by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations.
India’s Permanent Representative Harish Parvathaneni highlighted Gandhi’s concept of Sarvodaya, stressing that inclusive, equitable and sustainable development remains the antidote to rising inequality.
Guterres cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dialogue with a Flydubai pilot who, under attack, safeguarded passengers, underscoring Gandhi’s principle of Ahimsa in action.
The Secretary‑General’s remarks arrive as the UN Security Council prepares to debate conflict‑resolution mechanisms, urging member states to translate these lessons into urgent diplomatic action.
