On July 28, 2025, Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue officially dedicated the Kim and Olivia Lue Garfield Legacy Center, turning the former segregated school into a community hub.
Garfield School, built in 1937 to educate Black students during segregation, closed in 2010 and sat abandoned until a credit union occupied the site.
Lue, a native of Mexico, said the decision was personal, recalling classmates and teachers who shaped his early life: "This place shaped me, and I want to give back."
The $10 million Commitment to Community initiative, co‑founded with the Tyronn Lue Fund and Partners for Rural Impact, will fund after‑school programs, tutoring, and job readiness workshops for residents aged 6‑18.
Local resident Maria Hernandez, whose son now attends the newly renovated gym, expressed hope that the center will offer safe spaces and mentorship.
The center will host an inaugural youth leadership conference on September 15, 2025, and Lue plans to unveil the full program during a fundraising gala at Intuit Dome on October 19, 2025.
