Harry Cossyphas chased and detained 21‑year‑old Yagiz Dogan for jewelry theft in Brickell on Aug 6, after the suspect pepper‑sprayed him.
The chase began when Cossyphas heard a woman shouting "robber" in Spanish near Southwest 14th Street. He followed the suspect into an alley, was sprayed, but captured him at the Metromover station.
Police arrived minutes later. Dogan was taken into custody on third‑degree grand theft. Miami Police, through its ‘Do The Right Thing’ program, awarded Cossyphas a hero plaque.
The officer who led the award ceremony, Captain Antonio Rivera, said the teen's quick action "prevented further loss and saved the victim."
Witness Xio Fermin, who was walking his dog, remarked the incident "made us remember how safe our neighborhood can feel when someone steps up."
Cossyphas, now dubbed the ‘Spider‑Man of Brickell’, says he has no regrets but warns that citizen arrests can be risky. The department will review policies on bystander interventions.
