Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has announced a sweeping clean‑up of the state’s electoral roll, deploying 3,500 Booth Level Officers to 200 colleges and universities from Oct. 5 to 9 to help over 1.2 million students and workers register.
The initiative follows a protest on Oct. 3 by opposition parties demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after allegations that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) inflated voter numbers by up to 15 % in certain districts.
In addition to the campus drives, a house‑to‑house campaign is underway to collect Form 6 from eligible voters not yet on the roll, while special polling‑station camps on Oct. 10‑11 will cover those missed during home verification.
Relocated voters marked as absent or migrated can file applications online via the ECINET mobile app or submit paper forms to Electoral Registration Officers by Oct. 12; all submissions will be scrutinised before the final roll is issued.
A 17‑year‑old student from Pune said the campus camp made the registration process "simple and quick", and he hopes his peers will now vote in the upcoming assembly elections.
The final electoral roll is slated for release on Oct. 15, after which the Election Commission will conduct a final audit before the 2026 assembly polls.
