The demonstration outside the party headquarters on Thursday was a riposte to a police crackdown on opposition MPs in Delhi yesterday, where officers had broken up a sit‑in and used batons. Congress workers had gathered to protest the treatment of their colleagues and to demand accountability.
According to party spokesperson Bornali Phukan, officers had erected a barricade at Rajiv Bhawan’s entrance, blocking entry for workers who were carrying the national flag. Phukan said the police ‘manhandled’ former ACP president Ripun Bora, an incident that escalated when officers pushed him to the ground.
The party has announced it will file a civil suit against the police and seek compensation for the assault. No statement has been issued by the Guwahati Police Department.
A lone worker, holding the flag high, was photographed by local media as the officers moved in, illustrating the tense atmosphere. The incident is expected to prompt a formal complaint from Congress to the state Home Ministry.
