Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic all pledged to back India’s push for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council during a V4‑India foreign‑ministers’ meeting held on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly session.
Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár described the four V4 members as united in support, saying, “We all agree as V4 countries that India, as a part of the Global South and an emerging superpower in the Indo‑Pacific, must be at the table as a permanent member.”
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called the meeting a “new historic occasion,” noting that the five countries would deepen cooperation in politics, trade, technology, defence and people‑to‑people ties. He promised an annual V4‑India foreign‑minister forum and a joint business platform.
The ministers also outlined a joint roadmap for technology and innovation, citing shared interests in space, connectivity, research, education and cultural exchanges. Jaishankar highlighted the presence of over 6,000 Indian students across the V4, underscoring people‑to‑people links.
Beyond bilateral ties, the dialogue touched on global hotspots such as the war in Ukraine and the Gulf crisis. The V4‑India bloc agreed to reinforce multilateralism, strengthen defence cooperation, and expand cultural partnerships.
With this endorsement, India now has a critical bloc of European support as it seeks a formal vote on its UNSC bid from the UN General Assembly in 2025, a move that could reshape the council’s composition.
