The catalyst was a 2023 presentation to the American Mathematical Society. Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson, then high-school seniors, proved the 2,000-year-old Pythagorean theorem using the Law of Sines. Most mathematicians dismissed trigonometric proofs as circular reasoning, assuming the necessary formulas relied on the very theorem they tried to disprove. The students built a logical bridge that bypassed that trap, validating their work through rigorous peer review.
Barkley has long pushed young Black athletes toward careers in medicine, law, and engineering. This donation aligns with that mission, rewarding academic excellence over athletic potential. He isn't new to education philanthropy—having previously supported his alma mater, Auburn University—but this gift is tied specifically to the students' intellectual triumph.
The money arrives as a structured 10-year gift, with the first tranche hitting the school's accounts by September 2024.
