On Oct 16, 2026, the Delhi government increased the export duty on petrol fivefold to Rs 2.5 per litre and reduced the diesel levy to Rs 8.5 per litre, a move that reflects the latest fortnightly adjustment tied to global crude prices.
The aviation turbine fuel (ATF) export duty remains untouched at Rs 10.5 per litre, and the revised rates apply only to the Special Additional Excise Duty, with no road and infrastructure cess imposed on petrol, diesel or ATF exports.
Ministry of Finance notes that export duties are recalculated every two weeks based on the average international price of crude oil and the respective fuel during the period since the last review, a mechanism designed to keep India’s export levies in lockstep with market shifts.
The levy on diesel and ATF was first imposed on March 27, 2026, followed by the petrol export duty on May 16, 2026, after the government reintroduced windfall taxes in March amid soaring crude prices triggered by the US‑Israeli conflict over Iran.
These adjustments leave the domestic excise duty rates on petrol and diesel unchanged, ensuring that consumers inside the country will not see a rise in the taxes they pay on fuel purchases.
The ministry will continue its fortnightly review cycle, with the next adjustment slated for the following two‑week period, keeping export duties responsive to volatile global oil markets.
