Delhi traders, rattled by weeks of street demonstrations over the Chief Election Commissioner's alleged electoral malpractices, have issued a warning to protestors. They insist that Connaught Place, a commercial artery, cannot serve as a stage for political rallies. The New Delhi Traders Association says the protests have disrupted livelihoods and damaged business. They have urged demonstrators to move to the designated sites of Ramlila, Burari, and CBD grounds.
The call follows a new order from the Delhi Police that bars protests at Jantar Mantar and designates the three grounds as approved venues. The order, issued on Oct. 11, also imposes a standard operating procedure for any demonstration at those locations. The CJP’s ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ rally, a bannered march with the national flag, is slated for Central Park on Oct. 16‑17.
Central Park, a popular shopping hub on Connaught Place, will be locked for the public on the two days, according to a notice from the New Delhi Municipal Council. The notice cites the CJP gathering as the reason for the closure. The traders body says the park’s shutdown will only add to the economic strain already felt by shopkeepers, waiters and vendors. One vendor, who prefers anonymity, said he has seen a drop of about 30% in footfall during the protest days.
The traders association added that protesters have the right to voice grievances, but business owners have the right to earn a living. They called on political parties and agitators to respect the commercial nature of Connaught Place. The body’s message has circulated on social media, with the hashtag #SaveCP echoing the plea.
If protests continue at Connaught Place, the Delhi Police have warned of potential forceful dispersal. The traders body will file a complaint with the municipal authorities if the authorities fail to enforce the closure.
