Police officers transporting Ashik Ali from Dharapur to Azara in Kamrup district were confronted by an escape attempt at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, prompting officers to discharge a firearm.
The bullet struck Ali’s right leg, and he was immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Ali, pinned to the investigation of a student’s fatal injury at a homestay on September 26, had been charged under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code and was already in custody.
According to police, the shooting will now be scrutinised as part of the case; investigators will assess whether the use of force was justified and how the escape attempt unfolded.
The incident adds a new layer to the probe, and authorities plan to review the footage and interview the escorting officers before filing a formal report.
