On Tuesday, a convoy of opposition leaders – including Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Mahua Moitra and CPI(M) MP John Brittas – marched from Parliament to the Election Commission’s office, with the Gandhi siblings halting at Akashvani Bhavan to press their demands.
The standoff escalated when Delhi Police barred Rahul Gandhi from the broadcasting house. He pushed his way inside with his security detail, while officers tried to clear the area and prevent his entry, creating a tense scene that attracted a spill‑over of journalists and curious on‑lookers.
Govind Mohan, the Union Home Secretary, received a call from Priyanka Gandhi, who conveyed that the delegation will not back down until an appointment is granted. “We want a meeting with the Election Commissioners,” she told him, underscoring that the protest will endure until that objective is met.
Election Commissioners are expected to schedule the meeting within a week, after which the protest may wind up, officials said. The court‑watching crowd, which included a local schoolteacher who had to cross a traffic‑jammed corridor to get a photo, expressed a mix of frustration and hope that the government would heed the demands.
The protest has already disrupted traffic near Akashvani Bhavan, with commuters reported to have taken detours to avoid the congestion. As the Gandhi family remains on the ground, the political balance in Delhi’s capital city hangs in the balance, awaiting the outcome of the pending meeting.
