Paytm shares slipped 7% to ₹1,674.7 on Oct 13 after CNBC‑TV18 broke the news that the National Payments Council of India (NPCI) had postponed the Merchant Discount Rate rollout that was due on Oct 15. The dip came as market participants scrambled to digest the implication of a deferral on merchant volumes and fee structures.
Pine Labs and MobiKwik also fell – Pine Labs down 4–5%, MobiKwik down 5% – before rebounding to gains of 2% and 1.5% respectively. Pine Labs is now trading at ₹165.93, while MobiKwik sits at ₹244.3, both still below their issue prices.
NPCI issued a statement confirming the delay, saying the MDR will be rolled out after Diwali, the exact date to be announced later. The council added that the MDR is not being scrapped, a reassurance that the payment‑agglomeration ecosystem will continue to evolve.
The clarification silenced the market’s jitters; Paytm recovered 6% from the low, Pine Labs is up 2% and MobiKwik 1.5%. The shares’ quick rebound underscores that the delay is perceived as a short‑term hiccup rather than a systemic threat.
Looking ahead, the MDR implementation will likely occur in late November, once Diwali festivities conclude. Investors will monitor how the new timeline affects merchant transaction volumes and fee revenue for the payment aggregators. Analysts are also keeping an eye on RBI’s potential guidance on merchant discount rates, which could shape the sector’s profitability curve.
At present, Paytm remains 0.9% below its closing price, Pine Labs is 6% off its low but up 2% from yesterday’s close, and MobiKwik has reclaimed its losses with a 1.5% upside. The stocks’ performance will be closely watched as NPCI finalizes the MDR rollout date.
