
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Rs 13,000 crore development projects in Chennai on Sunday, 11 October, including the 36‑km Vadugapatti‑Therkuvenganallur stretch of NH‑744.
Modi will inaugurate the Poonamallee‑Vadapalani stretch of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2, built for Rs 4,900 crore, and will ride the line from Porur Bypass to Poonamallee Bypass as a symbolic launch. He said on X that the metro extension will transform daily commutes.
The prime minister will also open the 30‑km, four‑lane Madurai Ring Road section of NH‑744A, which will ease traffic around the historic city. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari welcomed the opening as a boost to commerce.
Modi will also lay foundation stones for new flyovers in Coimbatore and surrounding areas, upgrade port infrastructure across Tamil Nadu, and inaugurate the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras, a Rs 3,000 crore facility. Director Dr. S. Raman said the centre will accelerate research.
The visit, part of the government's infrastructure drive, will set the stage for upcoming projects slated for completion by 2028. Following the launch, the government will roll out detailed implementation plans and begin tendering for the new roads.
